Freshly Made Sketches 154 & Sam!

Hello there peeps! I’m so glad that you all enjoyed Donna’s mixed-media projects yesterday! They really are great! I had a good day yesterday. I got to go on a field trip for work, we all know that I love that! I went to BestBuy and Apple. I also stopped at one of our buildings that we have in Wantagh to measure the window for a sign. It was a beautiful day and I enjoyed the ride in the car. I had some errands to run when I got home and then crafted for a bit. I’m super excited for this evening though! Andrew and I are going to see Sam Smith!! I got the tickets a while ago as one of Andrews Birthday gifts. We are going to head into the city early and grab some dinner. The concert is at 8:00 and is all the way up at 175th Street and Columbus Avenue. I don’t think that I have ever been up that high in Manhattan! I will make sure that I have Andrew remind me to take lots of pictures! I can’t wait!! 😀

My card that I have for you today is for this week’s Freshly Made Sketches challenge…

Freshly Made Sketches #154

This was one of those times that I knew what I was going to do as soon as I saw the sketch! My card base is Soft Sky Card Stock. For the two strips I used a piece of 1 1/4″ Burlap Ribbon that I trimmed the edges of and pulled a few rows off. The second one is a piece of 7/8″ Cotton Ribbon. I used some Fast Fuse to adhere them both to the card. A piece of Vellum is up next and I used the Project Life Corner Rounder to round the corners before I heat embossed the sunburst image from the Kinda Eclectic Stamp Set in Crushed Curry Stampin’ Emboss Powder. Across the front is a piece of Very Vanilla that I flagged the ends on and stamped the greeting from the And Many More Stamp Set in Baked Brown Sugar. Finally, the bird is from the Choose Happiness Stamp Set and is also stamped in Baked Brown Sugar and cut out with my Paper Snips. A Stampin’ Dimensional holds him in place. So we have determined that Vellum and Heat Embossing are my things right now! LOL! I do love the way the vellum lets the background items peek through and the Choose Happiness and Kinda Eclectic Stamp Sets go with each other so nicely! I hope that you enjoyed my card for this week’s Freshly Made Sketches challenge. It’s always nice to have you visit and and I hope that you have a great Thursday! 🙂

  1. Good Morning Justin!

The Kinda Eclectic has been on my wish list since the catalog came out. I think it’s one of the most versatile sets I’ve seen to date. I love that you have such success embossing on vellum. Every time I see one of your cards with the vellum I vow to dig my vellum out and use it and then proceed to forget about it. So, right now, after I finish this comment I’m going to take it out and stick it in front of my nose so I don’t forget it’s there! LOL I really love this card. It conveys to a friend how much they mean to you. The softness of the colors speak “hug” to me. Fantastic job and fantastic photography.

Have a blast with Andrew tonight. Of course you need to let him know we are all anxiously awaiting his next card creation! 🙂

    1. Hi Grace,
I have to tell you that your descriptions of the cards are my favourite part of your comments. I like that the card makes you think of a hug. I hope you took your vellum out today! You’ll have to let me know what you did with it. I’m really having a lot of fun with the photography and I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

An interesting little tidbit of information, Andrew and I are on our way home from the city in the car and he’s typing the comments for me, so I’ll let him reply to your request…

Hi Grace! I know that you have been waiting quite some time for me to make another card and I promise it’s coming soon. I hope I don’t disappoint! It makes me smile just knowing that you want to see more cards from me, so thank you for that! From both Justin and I, hope your day was great! 🙂

  2. And a good morning to you, Justin! What a day-brightener you have sent us on this sunny day in Minnesota. I love the sun on vellum, with colors peeking from the background. SueSun

    1. Hello SueSun! I think that the vellum adds so much to the card as opposed to just a regular piece of card stock and I’m glad that you agree. Hope you had a lovely day in sunny Minnesota! 🙂

  3. Justin, Love what you did with this sketch. My 2 favorite stamp sets. The burlap is perfect. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Gerri,
They’re also two of my favourite stamp sets. I think it’s great how well they work together and I’m glad you enjoyed the card. Thank you! 🙂

  4. Hi Justin, every time you show a stamped vellum card it is better than the last and this one is no exception. I also like how you paired the natural cotton and burlap ribbons together. Have a wonderful time tonight at the Sam Smith concert. I hope you let us know how it was. He is my new favorite singer. Take Care.

    1. Hi Rosanne! I say it all the time but I really do think that the vellum adds so much to the card and I think it’s highly underused. I thought with a nice, open background, the two ribbons gave it it’s texture. The concert was great, you’ll hear more about it tomorrow! Thank you very much! 🙂

  5. Hi Justin! I’m soooo jealous of you and Andrew going to see Sam Smith tonight! After you mentioned him a while back I listened to his music and love him! Have a wonderful time! I love your card today—that sun image really pops on the vellum, doesn’t it? I was working with the Kinda Eclectic set earlier this morning too. I’ll never get tired of your projects using vellum! 😉 Have a great rest of your day—I’ll bet you’re chomping at the bit to get outta there! Have fun!

    1. Hi Karen! I’m so glad that I got to share Sam Smith with all of you and that you like him. We’ve been looking forward to this for a while and it was just as amazing as we had expected. Kinda Eclectic is definitely one of my favourite sets and you know how much I love heat embossing on vellum! LOL! Oh, you know me so well, I escaped at 2 PM! Hope your day was great! 🙂

  6. Hi Justin, I love the burlap and cotton ribbon placed next to each other behind the vellum. The kinda eclectic stamp is one of my favourites and so versatile. Donna is so talented and enjoyed seeing her canvases, especially the one featuring her granddaughter. It’s amazing how you can feel like you are in the place that the art is showing like Donna’s beach canvas. Do we get to see your canvas work?
Have a great time at the concert with Andrew, definitely jealous! LOL!
    Michelle xo

    1. Hello Michelle! Thanks very much! That sunburst image from the Kinda Eclectic set works with so many different things, I love it! I was really happy that Donna let me share her work, I think it’s fantastic, and I too can understated what you mean about transporting with the beach one. As soon as I finish mine, if that ever happens, I’ll post it. LOL! The concert was excellent, more on that tomorrow. Hope you had a good day! XO 🙂

  7. I’m lovin’ the burlap I’m seeing used in so many projects. Super card. And I am SOOO happy for you getting to go see Sam Smith. Will you please tell us all about it? I know it will be unforgettable.

    1. Hi Georgie,
I’m glad that I rediscovered the burlap, I’ve been having a lot of fun with it lately. I think it adds great texture. The concert was amazing, more on that tomorrow. Hope you had a good day! 🙂

  8. Another winner. i love burlap anything, It really makes a project. And embossing on velum is always a hit.
    Have an awesome time tonite.

I was off of work today, perfect! So after a few errands its been a crafty day. those are the best

    1. Hi Linda! I too am really enjoying the burlap on the projects, I’ve used it a lot lately. And you know how much I love vellum! The concert was fantastic!

Love it when you have a nice, crafty day and no work. They certainly are the best! Hope you enjoyed it! 🙂

  9. Your card is so very pleasing to the eye. Like how you used the two ribbons each with their different textures. The embossed sunburst of Crushed Curry on vellum is a winner also. Oh how fun that you and Andrew are going to Sam Smith this evening! Can’t wait to hear what you have to say about the concert.

    1. Hi Lisa! Thank you very much, I’m happy that you enjoyed the card! I love how much texture a little ribbon can add. The concert was great, more tomorrow. Hope your day was fun! 🙂

  10. One of my favorite cards by you! I love everything about it. The embossed sunburst from Kinda Eclectic is so bold and really grabs your attention. Great job….and enjoy a great concert tonight!

  11. Justin,
Yay! My favorite type of card by you! (really any card made by you is my favorite!), a collage card! You do them so well. I love the embossing on the vellum! And love love love that bird! I just got my Kinda eclectic set last week, hasn’t seen ink yet, but it will soon! I am now able to do steps, yay!, so I can be in my apartment downstairs! Oh my gosh, I am giddy over going down steps!
My back is healing, it no longer looks like a horse kicked me on my spine! I still have some pain and numbness but that is normal for two weeks out. I get very tired still, love my naps! Going down the steps is easier then up, but I am doing it! And I drove today for the first time in 2 weeks! That was more difficult than anything else! Trying to get in the car and swing that left leg in was kind of painful but I did it!!
Oh I am so excited for you and Andrew! It is going to be a great concert! I would love to see him, I guess I will live vicariously through you!
    Enjoy your night!
    Donna

    1. Donna,
Thanks so very much, you really are way too kind. But it does make me smile that all my cards are your favorites! You know how I am with my vellum and heat embossing. LOL! And yes, I’m a big fan of birds too. You’ll have fun when you finally get to sit down with the set, it’s quite versatile.
I’m so happy to hear that you are on the mend! It’s been a long time, and steps, how exciting is that?! I totally understand your giddiness!
Driving is well? Don’t do too much at once!
We had a very nice evening, a great dinner and a fantastic show. I’ll have pictures for you tomorrow.
Hope you enjoyed the rest of your day.
      XO 🙂

  12. Wow – this is fabulous Justin. The sunburst from Kinda Eclectic is so effective stamped on vellum and I love the addition of the cute little bird. Thanks for joining us at Freshly Made Sketches this week!
