  • Retro Scallop Garden Thanks

Wow! Sunday already?! Time is just chugging along! LOL! I had a nice day yesterday, I got some projects finished in the morning and then headed into Manhattan with Anthony and Bill to see Harmony Sweepstakes at the Miller Theater at Columbia University. We had a great time and it was sold out! Andrew and his group Satellite Lane won Audience Favorite for the second year in a row! They also won for best choreography! Congratulations to them on two well deserved wins! We hit up the diner after and I had some pancakes, haven’t had those in a while! I did manage to snap two quick pictures, the first one is of the outside of the theater…

    Miller Theater

And here is of one of the statues that stands outside a set of gates next to the theater. If you click on the picture and look he has six toes, I thought that was interesting!

    Columbia University Statue

Every so often when I’m working on a project I stop for a bit and make a just for fun card. I know, it’s odd that when you are working on craft projects that you would stop and make another one to take a break but that’s what I do! Today’s card is one of those.

The card uses a base of Whisper White Card Stock and I covered the entire front with a piece of Kaleidoscope Designer Series Paper. Two strips of Retro Fresh Designer Washi Tape go across the bottom. The tag is made using the Scallop Tag topper Punch. I trimmed the sides off to get a thinner tag and stamped the tag with one of the Paper Pumpkin Stamps in Gumball Green. The flower and leaves are from the Secret Garden Stamp Set and are both cut out with the Secret Garden Framelits. The leaves are stamped in Gumball Green and the Flower is heat embossed with White Stampin’ Emboss Powder on Daffodil Delight and sponged with some White Craft Ink. My greeting is from the Oh, Hello Stamp Set and is heat embossed in Tangerine Tango on a piece of Vellum Card Stock and adhered just under the flower. The tag has some White Bakers Twine on the top and Stampin’ Dimensionals adhere it to the card. I really am having fun with Vellum lately, it adds so much to a card. I also like the subtle background with the bold colors. I hope you enjoyed today’s just for fun card! I appreciate your taking some time to come and see what I’m up to and hope you have a lovely Sunday! 🙂

  • Paper Players 187 & Pics

I know I say it every Monday, that weekend just flew by. I guess what they say is true, time does fly when you are having fun. I had a nice morning in Manhattan and yes I have a few pictures for you. It was quite cold and windy, which of course made it feel much colder than it was. I got in a little early so I got to go to Starbucks and have a cup of coffee and just relax for an hour. I try to get in early so I can do that, I need it. I was on the Upper West Side and walked over to Riverside Drive on 87th Street. When I got to the end of the block and looked left I saw this really neat monument. I later discovered that it is the Soldiers and Sailors Monument to honor those that served in the Union Army during the Civil War. You can click HERE to learn more about it.

    Soldiers and Sailors Monument

After I crossed the street and took a picture of Riverside Park and the Hudson River. If it was Summer you would have to go down in the park to take a picture of the river because all of the leaves would be on the trees.

    Riverside Park & the Hudson

I decided that I was going to meet my friend Kim for lunch and she is on the East Side. I thought a little exercise was in order so I decided to walk over through Central Park. I don’t know if I have mentioned this but I can never get through the park without getting lost. You may laugh but none of the paths go straight across, they all curve. I decided to stay close to the reservoir since I have had success before! LOL! I came across this little bridge that leads up to the path that goes around it and I thought it was neat. I believe it’s called Bridge #27, I kid you not!

    Central Park - Bridge #27

You can see some people running around the Reservoir getting in their exercise too! I’m not a runner, unless I’m being chased! When I came out of the park I was near the Guggenheim Museum, I thought you might like to see that too!

    Guggenheim Museum

If you want to read a little more about the Guggenheim you can click HERE. It a fun building right? With all of the round edges along side all of the sharp ones of the other buildings.

No on to today’s post, Monday means it’s time for this week’s Paper Players challenge and this week clever Jaydee has a Clean & Simple Spring one for us…

    Paper Players #187

I really do love that Sale-A-Bration Designer Series Paper but I have another favorite that I wanted to use more! My card starts off with a base of Whisper White Card Stock. I took another piece of Whisper White and used the Ovals Collection Framelits to cut out a window in the lower right corner. The stamped images are from the Happy Watercolor Stamp Set. My flowers are stamped twice, both times in Basic Black, once on the main panel and again on another piece of Whisper White. I used my Blender Pen and some Bermuda Bay Ink to color in the flowers and cut them put with my Paper Snips. The dots are stamped in Encore Gold Metallic Ink randomly. A piece of Watercolor Wonder Designer Washi Tape goes down the left side and Stampin’ Dimensionals adhere the flowers to the panel and the panel to the card. My greeting is from the Moments Ago Stamp Brush set and is cut out from a piece of Bermuda Bay with my E-Cutter. Some 2-Way Glue holds in inside the window. The butterfly is a piece of Gold Foil Sheet that I cut out with the Beautiful Wings Embosslit to finish off the card. I really like this card a lot, it’s simple and soft. I love the Bermuda Bay and the Gold together, but then again gold makes everything better right?! I really hope that you enjoyed my card for this week’s Paper Players challenge. I also hope you enjoyed the Manhattan pics! Thank you so much for coming by to see what I’m up to! Have a great Monday! 🙂

  • SUO Challenges 92 & Satellite Lane!

A very happy Tuesday to you! Why is it a very happy Tuesday, you ask? We’ll get to that in a minute. We had some snow flurries yesterday morning just to remind us that winter is still not over, but it did manage to get up to 50° in the afternoon, which is tropical compared to what most of the winter has been, in the 20’s! Work was productive and quiet again. Last night I came home, made a card, and plotted with Andrew (again, you’ll see why soon). Okay, okay, enough suspense. Last Wednesday I told you that Andrew and his a cappella group, Satellite Lane, had a big announcement. Well, today’s the day! And who better to tell you about it than Andrew himself?!

Hello there, JK Cards readers! Before I even get started with my announcement, I want to thank you all. So many of you have been concerned about me when I had surgery back in December, when I got really sick in January, and I’ve had quite a few requests to make another card to post on Justin’s blog! I never thought that making a cameo on the blog would turn me into such a celebrity! LOL! I obviously look at Justin’s post every day and I look at all the comments, too. Your sincerity and kindness is truly appreciated! I was just waiting for the right time to thank everyone, and now seemed appropriate. Now on to the exciting announcement! Before I get to the actual announcement, let me give you all a little background on Satellite Lane. We are a group of seven geeky teachers who came together to make music two years ago. In that time, we’ve done some pretty awesome things like sing for people’s wedding proposals, compete in major competitions, and have concerts with groups that are known world wide. All of that has been great, but our announcement today may be our biggest one yet! After a lot of hard work, we are proud to release our first official single, “Geeky Girl”! If any of you like nerdy TV shows, comics, video games, or any other geeky stuff, this is the song for you! If you don’t like any of those things, it’s still a pretty catchy tune, so you should give it a listen! You can get a preview of the song HERE, and it is available for purchase on Loudr.fm HERE. We are really proud of how it came out and we’re hoping we can get as many people as possible to get the word out! So, if you like the song, share the link with your friends, post it on your blog, post it on Facebook, and don’t forget to buy a copy for yourself! As I said before, your help and support for me in general has been amazing, I can’t thank you all enough! I hope you enjoy the song, and I promise, I’ll make another card this week! Thank you so much for your time, it is greatly appreciated.

    GeekyGirlCoverArt

Wow! Sorry for that, once he gets typing, there’s no stopping him. LOL! Thanks for reading his book, it’s the first in a series. Ha ha ha! All joking aside, I heard several drafts of the song throughout the process and have had my copy since last week on repeat. It’s really a great song and brings back so many memories! I really hope you enjoy it. Now on to today’s business, my design team card for this week’s SUO Challenges. And this time around we asked you to use pinks and purples in your project.

My card starts off with a base of Blushing Bride Card Stock. The background is a piece of Afternoon Picnic Designer Series Paper. I really like the look of notebook paper and we really don’t have any, but it’s not really that hard to create. I took a piece of Very Vanilla and used the “Vintage” Spiral Border Punch (a favorite of mine) and a Wisteria Wonder Stampin’ Write Market to draw the lines. Ta-da! Instant notebook paper! Two banners, one in Wisteria Wonder cut out with the Banners Collection Framelits and embossed with the Beautifully Baroque Textured Impressions Embossing Folder, and the other a piece of Very Vanilla stamped in Blushing Bride with the Hearts a Flutter Stamp Set and cut out with the Hearts a Flutter Framelits Dies. Two butterflies from the Papillon Potpourri Stamp Set, stamped in Blushing Bride, are punched out with the Elegant Butterfly Punch and adhered to the card with Stampin’ Dimensionals. My greeting is from the Moments Ago Stamp Brush Set and is cut out with my E-Cutter from a piece of Elegant Eggplant. On the top is a Subtles Designer Series Button with some Linen Thread tied in a bow. How’s that for some pink and purple?! And by the way, I really think we should start a petition to bring back the Spiral Border Punch! So there you have my card for the SUO Challenges. Click HERE to visit the blog and see what the other designers have done with the challenge and let’s see what you come up with! As always, I appreciate your time, but today I have to say that I think Andrew appreciates it more seeing as he took up more of it. LOL! Thanks again for stopping by today, and have a musical Tuesday!

  • Paper Players 186

Well that weekend seemed to go a bit faster than recent ones in memory. It can’t only be because of the time change… can it?!?! I had a nice day yesterday. I ran some errands with Heather and crafted a bit too. It was a pretty quiet day, needed every so often I guess. I’m not a huge fan of them but it does do the mind good to rest a bit! How was everything for you this weekend?

It’s Monday so that means that once again it’s time for my card for this week’s Paper Players. Anne Marie has given us a neat color challenge…

    Paper Players #186

I think the picture for the color challenge is pretty neat and I wanted to do something film related but thought that too obvious! My card starts off with a base of Smoky Slate Card Stock. The background is a piece of Marina Mist. I used the Music Notes Standard Wheel and heat embossed it with White Stampin’ Emboss Powder on an angle across the lower half. The stars from Crushed Curry are cut out with the Circle Card Thinlits and one that I punched out with the “Vintage” Large Star Punch are randomly placed on the background. My tag is also Smoky Slate, The top is punched with the Scallop Tag Topper Punch. The stars that are on the tag are created using Embossing Paste and a stencil that my daughter brought me home from work. Have I mentioned that Taylor works at Michaels?!?! She brings me home little goodies every once in a while and I have to use them, right?! LOL! On the top of the tag is a piece of Crushed Curry 3/4″ Chevron Ribbon tied with some White Bakers Twine. My greeting is from the Really Good Greetings Stamp Set and is stamped in Marina Mist. The tag and greeting are adhered with Stampin’ Dimensionals. I really like the way the embossing paste stars look on the tag and the embossed music notes across the bottom. There you have my card for this week’s Paper Players color challenge from Anne Marie. I really hope that you enjoyed the card and I thank you for visiting! Have a marvelous Monday! 🙂

  • Pals Paper Arts 194

What day is today?! That’s right, kids, it’s FRIDAY!!!! 🙂 Let’s see, I taught myself some new things on the computer at work yesterday which is always a good way to add things to your resume. LOL! Last night, I installed Andrew’s brand new car stereo for him. This will insure that he can text using Siri via Bluetooth instead of his hands while he’s driving. Safety first! Tonight is the Satellite Lane concert at the Long Island Children’s Museum! Andrew has assured me that he will remind me to take pictures to show you! A very good way to start the weekend :-).

Before I get to today’s post for this week’s Pals Paper Arts color challenge, I want to thank them for choosing my card from last week’s challenge as one of their picks. You can see my original post HERE and the winner’s post HERE

    PPA 194

My card starts off with a base of Wisteria Wonder Card Stock and I covered the entire front with a piece of paper from the Afternoon Picnic Designer Series Paper Pack. Next, I stamped a piece of Smoky Slate with the Dictionary Background Stamp in Smoky Slate and cut out with the Circles Collection Framelits. Before adhering it to the card, I pierced a circle around it using the Essentials Paper-Piercing Pack. A piece of paper from the Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Paper Pack goes down the left side of the card. Before adhering it to the card, I wrapped some “Vintage” Wisteria Wonder Baker’s Twine around it and attached a Subtles Collection Designer Button to it. Three feathers from the Fine Feathers Stamp Set, two stamped in Wisteria Wonder and one stamped in Night of Navy, are cut out with my Paper Snips and adhered underneath the button. My greeting is from the Simply Celebrate Stamp Set and is heat embossed in White Stampin’ Emboss Powder on a piece of flagged Night of Navy. I like the contrasting look of the two DSP’s, the background being very graphic and precise while the panel is soft and random. Sometimes things that are complete opposites end up working really well together! I appreciate you stopping by today to see my card for this week’s Pals Paper Arts color challenge. I hope you have a fantastic Friday and a wonderful start to your weekend!

Well, all of that snow that we were supposed to get yesterday didn’t happen! Woo hoo! We got a dusting and it’s so cold here that none of it went away but that’s ok! Yesterday wasn’t too bad for a Monday. I got some things done at work and we had to go to Canon for a copier demonstration, our one is a piece of junk. We got the entire history of all of Canon’s products, not sure if that was necessary! After work I had card class at Sandy’s, always a good time. I came home and made the card that you are about to see here today. Once again I was lucky and put it together in my head before I got home! Love when that happens!

Before we get today’s post easy week Stampin’ Up! has some specials on current products and here is what they have for this week:

    Mojo335

I saw the element in the middle as a big frame! It was also funny the way the background is split, I just did something similar yesterday! The base of my card is Basic Black Card Stock. My background on the left is a piece of paper from the Sweet Sorbet Designer Series Paper pack, I also used a different piece for the inside of the frame. On the right is a piece of Pool Party that I embossed with the Decorative Dots Textured Impressions Embossing Folder. For the frame I used a piece of Sahara Sand and stamped it in Basic Black with the Dictionary Background Stamp. A piece of Summer Starfruit Twine from the Sweet Sorbet Accessory Pack is tied in a bow around the top. My greeting is from the A Dozen Thoughts Stamp Set and is stamped in Basic Back and the left side is flagged. The two flowers are from the Petal Parade Stamp Set and are stamped in Crisp Cantaloupe and Summer Starfruit, the smaller flower is punched out with the 1 1/2″ Circle Punch and the larger one with the 1 3/4″ Circle Punch. Both the frame and the flowers are adhered to the card with Stampin’ Dimensionals. I know I’ve said it before but I really do love the colors in the Sweet Sorbet Designer Series Paper and the Dictionary Stamp is still one of my all time favorites! And that is my card for this week’s Mojo Monday sketch challenge. Thanks so much for coming by to see it and I hope you all have a terrific Tuesday! 🙂

I had a lovely day in Manhattan yesterday despite the cold. Those cross-town winds were quite bitter! I started the day off paying my friend Ella a visit. She lives on 5th Avenue and 79th Street. She has one of the most amazing views of Central Park. I took this picture out of her kitchen window…

    Ella Window

You can see the buildings on the other side of the park and of course the yellow taxi cabs. I also went over to the West Side to see my friends Jon and Mary. When I was in the cab on the way back over to the East Side we went past Lincoln Center. I took this picture out of the window of the cab. It’s Avery Fisher hall where the New York Philharmonic performs…

    Lincoln Center

There really is so much to see and do in Manhattan and I love showing you little snippets of my day! When I got home last night I remembered that I didn’t have a card to post so I used this week’s Pals Paper Arts sketch for inspiration…

    PPA 193

Nice and simple which is just what I needed since I got home around 9:00! The base of my card is Coastal Cabana Card stock and tha background is a piece of Retro Fresh Designer Series Paper that I cut to 4 1/8 x 5 3/8 so there is just a thin border around the card. A strip of Baked Brown Sugar is embossed with the hearts from the Adorning Accents Textured Impressions Embossing Folders. The you is from the February Paper Pumpkin Kit and is backed with some Coastal Cabana that I punched out with the 1 1/4″ Circle Punch. Stampin’ Dimensionals hold them to the strip of Baked Brown Sugar. My love is from the “Vintage” Expressions Thinlits Dies and is cut out from Baked Brown Sugar and adhered to the DSP with 2-Way Glue. A very simple card that I actually think would make a nice masculine one! I hope that you enjoyed my pictures form Manhattan and my card for this week’s Pals Paper Arts sketch challenge. I appreciate you taking some time out of your day to spend with me and I hope that you have a wonderful Sunday! 🙂

  • Fab Friday 36

Once again people, it is my favorite day of the week… FRIDAY!!!!! It seemed to take a little longer to get here this week, but I’m happy we have arrived. We had two snow squalls here today. If you follow me on Instagram (@jrk912), I uploaded a video of one of them. It was a brisk 9° when I woke up this morning and we are supposed to hit a high of a whopping 21 today! I would like my 58° back from last weekend please. Tomorrow morning I’m off to Manhattan for a little while. If I can manage to take my hands out of my pockets while walking around, I’ll be sure to take some pictures for you to enjoy!

What makes this Friday more awesome than last Friday? It’s time for the next Fab Friday challenge! This time around we have a color challenge for you…

    Fab Fri 36 Sketch 2-28-2014

If you pay close attention to the colors, they are actually in the Kaleidoscope Designer Series Paper. Remember yesterday when I said that I tried something new, that something new was using Embossing Paste. My card base is a piece of Bermuda Bay Card Stock and the background is a piece of Basic Black. The honeycomb pattern on the Basic Black is created by using the Hexagon Hive Thinlits Die to cut out a piece of card stock that I used temporary adhesive to adhere to the background. I tinted the Embossing Paste with Crushed Curry Re-Inker and then used a credit card to spread it over the Die Cut. Once it was covered, I removed the Die Cut and let it dry. The flowers are from the Simple Stems Stamp Set, are stamped in Strawberry Slush on Whisper White and are cut out with the Secret Garden Framelits Dies. The butterfly is from the Nature’s Hello Host(ess) Stamp Set (apparently my stamp set of the week!), is stamped in Bermuda Bay and cut out with the Backyard Basics Framelits Dies. All of the flowers and the butterfly are adhered to the card using Stampin’ Dimensionals. Trying out the Embossing Paste was definitely an interesting experience but I think it came out pretty nice! Let me know what you think in the comments. So there is my Fab Friday card for the color challenge. Make sure you pay a visit to the blog to see what my fellow Design Team members have come up with and don’t forget to enter your card in the gallery as well! As always, I greatly appreciate you stopping by and I hope you have a fantastic Friday! 🙂

  • Paper Craft Crew 82

So how many of you out there are ready for spring?! I think there should be a petition started to get it here sooner. That really nice weather that we had over the weekend is now just a distant memory. Last night it dropped down to 20 degrees. This is going to be a very long 22 more days until spring. Okay, enough complaining about the weather because I’m sure it’s just as bad where you are! By the way, if you live in Florida or someplace nice and warm, I don’t want to hear it! LOL!

It’s Wednesday and that means I’m over on the Paper Craft Crew with my design team card for this week’s sketch…

    PCCCS082 2-26-2014

A simple sketch calls for a simple card (I know you’ve heard that before). My card base is a piece of Smoky Slate Card Stock. The background is made up of three different elements. The top is a piece of Gumball Green that I embossed with the Scallops Textured Impressions Embossing Folder. Across the middle is a piece of Watercolor Wonder Designer Series Paper. To finish off the background, the bottom is a piece of Island Indigo. I used the Fringe Scissors across the top of it and a piece of Silver 1/8″ ribbon goes across and is tied to the left of the greeting. My greeting is from the Label Something Stamp Set and is heat embossed in Gumball Green and punched out with the Ticket Duo Builder Punch. Two banners, one in Silver Foil Sheet and one in Whisper White, hang off the bottom. Simple yes but I still managed to use a good amount of stuff! There you have it, my design team card for this week’s Paper Craft Crew sketch challenge. Don’t forget to stop by the blog to see what the other designers have come up and enter your card in the gallery so we can see what you did with the sketch as well! Thanks for stopping by and have a great Wednesday!

  • Feathered Gold Love You

I will give you fair warning that this post is very photo heavy! LOL! I decided that yesterday was going to be a relaxing day so I ended up not going to Manhattan. However, my friend Kim did take a walk through Central Park and was kind enough to send me some pictures! We’ll get to those in a minute. Yesterday morning I got up and did some crafty things. I had a project sitting on my desk that I wanted to finish, it’s my card for today and I LOVE it! I ran some errands with Andrew and we had some Sonic for lunch. After I came home and finished some more projects. The rest of the day was quiet except for some car trouble for Andrew which hopefully turns out to be covered by a recall. Oh, remember that wine that I told you about the other day? Well, I went back to Stew Leonard’s and I remembered to take a picture of the sign:

    Layer Cake Malbec

Doesn’t that sound delicious?!?! Believe me it was! I tend to prefer a Pinot Noir but I really like this one too!

Now for some Manhattan pictures. The first one is a wide shot of the Conservatory Garden. In the warmer weather they are filled with flowers. I’ll make sure and go in the spring to show you the difference.

    Conservatory Garden

In the center you can see the Untermyer Fountain. Walter Schott’s Three Dancing Maidens depicts a circle of three young women whose dresses cling to their wet bodies as if they were perpetually in the fountain’s spray. Here is a close up of the fountain:

    Untermyer Fountain

Pretty neat isn’t it? You can go HERE to read a little more about the three ladies.

Ok, now on to my card for today. I was inspired by a card that I saw on Pinterest and I needed to make a card with lots of goodies on it and this definitely has a lot of stuff! I also made an exception to a rule I try to never break; I used glitter! I’ll be cleaning that up for a while! My card base is a piece of Whisper White Card Stock. Across the top is a piece of paper from the Kaleidoscope Designer Series Paper. The top right and lower left corners are rounded. The next thing I did was stamp the arrows from the Peachy Keen Stamp Set in Encore Gold Metallic Ink. I used a piece of Gold Fancy Foil Designer Vellum for my “background” and stamped the love from the Best of Love Stamp Set in Basic Black. My arrow is one of the pieces from the Essentials Wooden Elements and the XOXO is from the Quite the Pair Stamp Set and is stamped also in Basic Black. Three stars are cut out from Gold Foil Sheet, one using an element from the Circle Card Thinlits and two with the Merry Minis Punch Pack. In the upper right is one of the mini clothespins from the Tag a Bag Accessory Kit with a piece of Gold Bakers Twine tied in a bow. In the clip are two feathers that I cut out with my e-cutter and the Feathered Woodcuts Digital Kit. I then heat embossed them with Gold Stampin’ Emboss Powder. A small piece of Basic Black that I flagged is on top. Finally I used my e-cutter to cut out the you, it’s the American Typewriter Font and is covered in Gold Stampin’ Glitter. I love this card! The colors and all of the elements work well together and are fun! I’m really having a good time with my e-cutter too. The Feathered Woodcuts is definitely my favorite MDS file so far! I really hope that you enjoyed my card for today. Special thanks to Kim for the pictures and I thank you very much for coming by to see it all and hope that you have a great Sunday everyone! 🙂
